Grapefruit Campari #2

Yet another version of my favourite combination: Campari and grapefruit. In this variation, I also used some yuzu marmelade, which you can buy in any cold storage (called "honey citron tea" on the label). This is a tri-citrus drink which combines yuzu, lime and grapefruit: an extremely refreshing combination of sweet, sour and bitter.

Ingredients:
- Pure grapefruit juice
- Campari
- Martini rosso
- Honey citrol tea (Yuzu marmelade)
- Lime

Freeze the grapefruit juice in an ice tray (I used this fancy 'long sticks' shaped tray).
Mix 1 part of campari, 1 part of martini rosso, 1 tbsp of Yuzu marmelade, 1 part of water. Shake with lots of ice in a cocktail shaker, then serve and decorate with the lime and the grapefruit ice cubes.

Grapefruit Campari

A simple Italian style aperitivo or cocktail for a hot Sunday afternoon. If you like Campari, you will love this. The required ingredients are:
  • 1 large grapefruit
  • 100ml Campari
  • 50ml Cinzano dry (or Martini dry)
  • 3-4 pink peppercorns (optional)

Peel the grapefruit, remove all the peel/white parts and put all the flesh into a blender. Add the Campari, Martini and optional peppercorns. Blend at high speed for about 3 minutes, until it's well blended and foamy. Pour the mixture into a shaker with a generous amount of ice, and shake until the mixture is ice cold. Gently pour into a Martini glass.

Coffee Bar K - Revisited

The other day I paid another visit to my favourite cocktail bar, which I previously reviewed on this blog. They were celebrating their 3rd year in Singapore on the day, and I was glad to witness their success, happy with the fact that such a specialist place has been able to survive through these difficult times.

This is a bar where not only they strive for quality, but they also deliver a unique and sophisticated ambiance like no others in Singapore.

Once again, their classic selection of cocktails, theatrically prepared and mixed in front of the customers, didn't fail to impress me.

Summer cocktail

What's best than a refreshing cocktail on a beach on the Italian coast. This is what you call a typical Italian cocktail, very refreshing, simple, based on Italian products that are readily available in Singapore.

All you need is:
  • Limonata San Pellegrino (available at any Cold Storage)
  • Fernet Branca
  • A slice of lemon for decoration
  • Ice

Put 4 ice cubes into a tall glass, pour 1cm of Fernet Branca into it, and top with limonata San Pellegrino. Stir and decorate with a slice of lemon.

Coffee Bar K - Cocktail Gourmet

Coffee bar K is a 'Japanese bar' located at UE Square. It's such a unique experience that I found myself becoming a regular. The high degree of professionalism is admirable, and while the solemn atmosphere might be a deterrent to some, it's actually one of its strengths. Looking at the place from outside reminds me of a classic painting by 'Edward Hopper', which is perhaps due to the fact that the long bar is fully exposed by a huge transparent window, and yet so subtly isolated from the outside.

Coffee bar K is a place where making cocktails is a serious business. The Japanese bartenders are highly trained, and the selection of alcohol is surprising. There is a cover charge of $15 after 9pm which includes some snacks like wasabi chips and raw ham and a fruit platter, but don't be discouraged by that as you will get what you are paying for.
The menu includes a never ending list of spirits and cocktails, and some hot food is also served in case you need a quick bite.
If you are a 'Martini' lover, I absolutely recommend having one of those, either vodka or gin based. You will have a chance to taste a Martini at its purest. The Negroni (a Campari based cocktail) is also a house special, an excellent opening for those who find Martini's too dry.

The grasshopper is a minty cocktail with a dash of milk, superbly shaken into a foam that makes it so light you will finish it without even realising. I would particularly recommend it for the ladies.

The peach Bellini is made with real peach puree', not peach liqueur or flavourings as other bars do. It does taste like the original version of this classic Venetian cocktail.

This Yuzu based cocktail was designed for me by the bartender. The floating layer of crystals adds texture to the sharp tangy flavour of this mixer. A real delicacy for Yuzu lovers.

Whether you like your cocktails or you are looking for a good selection of whiskies or Vodkas, whether you are out with a client or a date, Coffee Bar K will be a special experience. It is a place where drinking is as religious as eating at a Michelin rated restaurant.
